About Gary

Rev. Dr. Gary Stuckey, Diploma of Divinity (MCD); Bachelor of Arts (Murdoch); Master of Ministry (ACD): Doctor of Ministry (ACD).

Gary is a recently (July 2024) retired Uniting Church minister from Adelaide, South Australia.

Gary trained for the Baptist ministry, being ordained in 1982. He served congregations in Port Pirie in South Australia and Claremont and Byford in West Australia. Returning to South Australia he transferred into the Uniting Church and has ministered in the Taperoo, Marion, Colonel Light Gardens and Seacliff congregations.

Beginning in the early 1980’s, he has felt a deep drawing to the Monastic path, a journey which has nurtured and sustained him over, now, many years. This passion has provided him with some satisfying opportunities.   For nearly 20 years Gary was a domestic monastic member of the Brothers and Sisters of Charity, who are an integrated monastic community based in the USA. In April 2015 he transferred his vows and is now a Brother in the Community of the Transfiguration, a Baptist Monastery in Victoria (Aus), endeavoring to live a monastic lifestyle in the world.

As a Uniting Church minister, he had the opportunity to establish a new faith community, the Stillpoint Community, a contemplative worshipping community which sought to draw its inspiration from the monastic arm of the Church. From 2010-2016 he also served as the Director of the Stillpoint Spirituality Centre.

He has had over 30 years’ experience as a spiritual director and nearly that long teaching meditation and leading retreats. He has taught the History of Christian Spirituality and an intensive on Benedictine spirituality at Uniting Church’s theological college and co-taught in an ecumenical program for the formation of spiritual directors. In 2006 he co-authored a book, Tending the Seed, on spiritual practices. He delights in journeying with people as the explore a deeper union with God.

In 2010 Gary came to the UK to attend a Monos conference. That began an association with Monos and Anthony which has grown over the ensuing years. He returned to the UK again in 2013 and 2018 to again attend the conference, on the latter occasion to speak at it, and to simply hang out with Anthony and his family absorbing more of the ministry of Monos.

In his spare time, he enjoys reading, playing the guitar and singing, walking in the hills near his home or on the beach, cycling and sometimes likes gardening.

Gary is married to Marilyn. They have two adult children and four grandchildren. He is looking forward to spending more time with them in retirement.
